Your's truly has written twice about the stupidity of the expansion, and only Sunday hoped Texas would man up.
The Horns did.
So here's a link to the first "expansion is bad" column and to the second "really, expansion is very bad" column.
Add Texas, Oklahoma and A&M to the teams you can root for, since their administrations proved to not be completel greedy - at least in this situation - dirtbags.
Colorado? You screwed up. Pac-10? Colorado's not a big-time player. Nebraska and the Big Ten? You didn't, well, Mercer things - and Mercer has been a verb for decades - but it's not nearly as sweet as you think.
I hoped Texas would man up, and it did. Stunningly, so did A&M.
The SEC? Folks, you're talking about somebody who drinks no Kool-Aid - hell, there's none left anywhere.
Greed didn't completely win out. Monday was a very, very good day. Especially if people stand by their word. That, with college sports, is always an iffy proposition.
Monday was an absolutely great, exquisite day for college sports, which do, yes, include sports other than football. Open thine mind.
LOUGHDMOUTHINGS
There are those surprised that Tattnall's DeAndre Smelter went so late in the pro baseball draft.
There are those who aren't, although the 14th round was late.
Reasons: Smelter's pitching repertoire is limited to an often-flat fastball without much consistent movement, a minus breaking ball, little off-speed, and the perception that him working with Kevin Brown meant he was connected with agent-devil Scott Boras, who had two of his pimps at the Tattnall-FPD game Smelter threw in.
Good kid, but there is skepticism from this seat as to what his future is. ...
It's rare that an online end-of-story comment inspires much more than throwing up in your mouth with absolute idiocy, but we do have a winner on an online column by Jeff Schultz of the AJC on Braves' hitting coach Terry Pendleton.
Pendleton has caught grief for several years because Atlanta isn't a collection of Joe Mauers. Schultz wondered if the same folks constantly griping fact-free about Pendleton when the young-or-old Braves weren't hitting are giving him any love now.
Offered P-Man:
"Too many people look for something to complain about. Let’s just enjoy the game, win or lose! Do I want to win every game? Sure! But if we did, what’s the fun in that? If you have to win every game, challenge a 4-year-old to a video game!"
A drop of logic on a sweaty day. ...
ESPN's Joe Schad reports that Texas is heading to the Pac-TBA, while most other media outlets report that the Horns are hoping for a way to keep the Big 12 alive.
Within only a few hours, the reports are from ESPN news services that the Big 12 has a pretty good offer on the table.
Oops. And by the end of the night, um, well, Schad was nowhere near right on about anything. A normal day with web-related “national” reporting.
A reason why so much of this hand-wringing and breathless updates are annoying. So much is wrong, and ya know what? We'll know when we know.
The really bad news here is that Texas A&M may screw it all up and bolt for the SEC, which frankly, doesn't gain much by the move. A comment I saw that suddenly A&M will start outrecruiting Texas in Texas from the SEC was apparently not offered tongue in cheek or head up, well, ya know. ...
A reminder that sports fans are, well, kinda stupid when it comes to a grip on reality, courtesy a few weeks back of the Toronto Sun's Steve Simmons:
"Perception is everything. Jason Heyward, with nine home runs and 35 RBI, is having an amazing rookie season in Atlanta. Albert Pujols, with nine home runs and 34 RBI, is having a horrible season in St. Louis."
Indeed. ...
I'm telLin' ya, college baseball is remarkably underrated. I love these double-elimination regionals and super regionals. And later, why you should plan to go to the College World Series, which is a better event than bigger things. ...
Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times paid attention to hockey this season.
"Rapper Snoop Dogg says he likes to wear a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey because the hockey team's logo reminds him of a marijuana leaf.
"And in a related story, the Snooper just awarded himself the Lady Bong Trophy." ...
Having defended Pendleton in principle for a few years - mainly against simple arguments and a lack of grip on the personnel - the Braves do need to clean house when the season's over. ...
The Pac-TBA will regret hitching its wagon to Colorado. ...
I can't watch Stephen Strasburg anymore. All those strikeouts remind my way too much of my lovelife. It's just too depressing. ...
If Texas A&M wasn't consistently a major player in the Big 12 - which now catches so much grief for allegedly being inferior - why did anybody think the Aggies will be a player in the SEC? ...
The more I read about the Big 12 surviving, I get more giddy. Wow. It's a pleasant shock. Greedy dirtbags didn't win.
This is rare. This is good. BP should take notes. ...
I grew up an hour from Baltimore. That the Orioles have sucked so long hurts, as does this from the aforementioned Perry in Seattle:
"Friday, in case you missed it, was National Donut Day.
"They hapless Orioles obviously got the memo, losing 11-0."
