Yup, Gators are No. 1 again

Football is upon us, so arguments and disagreements are few and redundant analysis is almost non-existent.
    Ahem.
So then we have CBSSports.com's little summer project: Super schools.
It ranked its top five colleges based on football and basketball success.
To the dismay of those in these parts, the winner is Florida. It's hard to argue, considering the Gators have more football and basketball national titles in the last decade than some BCS conferences.
Behind Florida: No. 5 Pittsburgh, No. 4 Wisconsin, No. 3 Ohio State and No. 2 Texas.
Honorable mentions: West Virginia, North Carolina, BYU and Oklahoma.
Florida finished second in the 2009-10 national athletics director's all-sports standings with 1310.25 points, behind Stanford's 1508.50.
Ohio State was eighth, Texas 15th, Wisconsin 21st, and Pittsburgh 112th.
Of the HMs: North Carolina was seventh, Oklahoma 12th, BYU 36th, and West Virginia 37th. Sure, that's more than just football and basketball, but worth a look nonetheless.
The explanation for Pitt (and it's certainly needed):
"Now clearly West Virginia has had more overall success in football the past five years. But (writer and panelist Dennis) Dodd believes that Pitt is on the rise under coach Dave Wannstedt and isn't sold that West Virginia will remain a power under Bill Stewart. Therefore the Panthers came in at No. 5, while West Virginia just missed out."
I have nothing against Wannstedt, other than the porn star mustache from the Brian VanGorder school of facial hair, but wasn't this poll on the current and past? Give Stewart another year, and note that Pitt has had only two winning seasons under Wannstedt, the last two, and we’ll have a better idea.
Pitt is 19-7 and WVU 18-8 over the past two seasons. That's not exactly running away with things.
Naturally, we shall see what happens this season, which, thankfully is right around the corner.
Sadly, football weather is not right behind it.

LOUGHDMOUTHINGS
OK, so how about a reality show with Favre, Chad Johnson, TO and all the real (idiot) housewives on an island.
But with no cameras and no way to return. Yes, I believe that would work. I'd be happy not watching 'em. ...
The Professional Golf Association is working with law enforcement to put out an APB on Tiger Woods' game. ...
Prediction of two weeks ago: The Braves will fall out of first at some point, perhaps more than once, and end up winning the division by four games.
Pass the syrup, I'm waffling on that last part.
Watch out for the home series next week against Washington. Of course, keep an eye on the Mets and Phillies this weekend in New York, and Atlanta hosts Florida and New York at the end of the month.
The Braves’ final seven series are against St. Louis, Washington, at New York, at Philly, at Washington, and against Florida and Philly.
The Phillies have just about the same slate.
Strap up, we're gonna have us a pennant race. ...
As per the Super Schools, there sure does seem to be evidence that SEC fans can stop whining about how tough the road is and all, and how other conferences have some sort of advantage.
The SEC has four football national championships - including LSU splitting with Southern Cal in 2003 - and two basketball trophies since 2000. ...
And hold on to your Hall of Fame reservations, Jason Heyward is batting only .262 with 12 homers, a bit off from the breathless pre- and post-slump predictions of a few months ago.
Ditto that rookie of the year award.
Heyward's still very much in the hunt, as is Stephen Strasburg, especially if he stays healthy and gets those 100 innings planned for him.
Of the position rookies with at least 150 at-bats in both leagues, Heyward's .262 average is 14th, and he's tied for fourth in homers and is fourth in RBIs. He's also third with 87 strikeouts.
Then again, he's on a division leader and will have a chance to do something down the stretch.
Strap up, we're gonna have us a rookie race. ...
It was extremely disheartening that the first NFL game on the tube this year is the Whiny Lookatme Receivers against the Facelifted Owner D-bags.
Thus, an evening of more on the self-promoting idiots, especially the one new to the Bungles, Terribly Obnoxious, than a stomach can handle.
Suggestion: Mute button and find a station on the internet to listen to, well, almost any football game.
Especially on Fox, home of America's worst announcers, producers and directors.
And I continue to hope that those two receivers - how can they run fast with their mouths open and flappin'? - run into each other on a crossing pattern. ...
A representative in Pa. has nominated Joe Paterno for the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
    Hmm.
Nice thought, but no. We can certainly do better than a coach who won't let go and who regularly whines and chases referees and often big-times people.
Then again, Bear Bryant and Muhammad Ali have one, sooo, uh, yeah, I don't know. ...
Exactly how stupid can a team and management be?
That's too easy in both areas, especially since management is why so many things suck: the decision-makers.
Who, though, thought that hiring Isiah Thomas as a consultant was wise? Worse, who thought that approving it was a good move?
Thomas is pretty scuzzy, and last we checked, head coach of a basically forgotten college program in Florida. And an NBA team – the Knicks - is going to hire him as a consultant?
People in charge are absolutely fascinating. ...
Disheartening, II: The Whiny Lookatme Receivers against the Facelifted Owner D-bags Bowl was the most-watched preseason NFL game in nine years and Hall of Fame game in 11.
Wow. Have no idea why, other than people are desperate for football. Really, sadly, pathetically desperate. ...
Random Unrelated Thought: If the endorsement of Politician A by Politician B, despite neither knowing each other, influences your vote, you are part of the majority voting for the wrong reasons.
Think for yourself. What somebody eight states away thinks is pretty irrelevant. And if you're going to complain about government, why take the advice of somebody in it? ...
And, hmm, how about that, two Big East programs in the top six of the big programs? To go with one SEC and two Big 10/11/12. ...
Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel again matches life with sports:
"Lindsay Lohan  got out of jail in just two weeks. The only way she could have been given a lighter sentence is if she'd been a star linebacker at an SEC school."
